The art of making your Self: "Seek the wisdom of the ages but view the world through the eyes of a child"

Play, ask, listen, believe in magic. In my humble opinion being "growed up" is most about staying genuine to yourself throughout all the things which will come your way that tell you what you are and who you should be. You can grow up up up into an “adult” and not realize the beauty that you are still that child too. To make is to play. To play is to learn. I live my life as one giant mixed media experiment inspired by recycled materials, all things whimsical and the teachings of Wabi-Sabi: the art of imperfection. I believe creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes and that the art is learning what works and how to develop your voice. Being creative is a way of life from how I wear my hair to how I deal with icky life stuff and all that in between. Hello! My name is Mary. My work is about how I choose to use my powers to spread a little whimsy around. I want my work to lighten you up. I want you to pass that spirit on. The process of making art teaches me how to live creatively, there is no right or wrong way. When in doubt, keep trying. Feeling stuck? Don't over think it. No criticism allowed. Trying your best is good enough. Make time for snack breaks. Ask questions. Surrender to the process. Go ahead and enjoy because it's okay to have fun. Be kind, especially to yourself. Celebrate others. Make a mess, clean up your mess. Take care of yourself and your stuff. If you don’t have red, use blue (Picasso said that). Finish what you start even if it takes you a lifetime. You can never grow out of creativity. It's all a work in progress and trust that the pieces will come together eventually, maybe not in the way you expect but in the way it is supposed to- accept what is. The number one most important lesson making art has taught me is that I am Mary and you are You. We are supposed to be different but we are better together. Being creative provides a way to know and share ourselves. It is a universal language that can transcend our limitations and connect us to each other, what a beautiful opportunity.
This is my paper mache heart.
